New Chapter: Towards AI-enhanced computer-assisted interpreting

I am thrilled to announce my chapter for an upcoming publication on Interpreting and Technology. The chapter titled “Towards AI-enhanced computer-assisted interpreting” delves into the evolution of digital tools for interpreters and the rising influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on Computer-Assisted Interpreting (CAI).

As a researcher and practitioner in the field, I have spent the better part of the last two decades observing and analyzing CAI tools shifting from simple glossary creation tools to complex workstations that aid interpreters at every stage of their workflow. The emergence of AI has significantly expanded the capabilities of CAI tools, bringing to life features such as automatic speech recognition, machine translation, and more. Such features have the potential to be integrated into real-life application for the augmentation of professional and non-professional interpreters.

This new chapter offers readers an exhaustive overview of the journey of CAI tools. It begins by examining the underlying rationale for developing bespoke interpreter support tools, keeping in mind the specific needs of interpreters. I provide a chronological mapping of CAI technology development, and an insightful comparison and categorization of available tools.

The chapter further delves into the integral role AI plays in interpreting technology, discussing key AI topics in detail. The ethical implications of using AI in interpreting are also critically analyzed.

Here’s a sneak peek into the outline of the chapter:

  1. Introduction
  2. Interpreting Workflow and CAI Tools
  3. History of Computer-Assisted Interpreting Tools
  4. Language Technologies and Artificial Intelligence
  5. AI-Enhanced CAI Tools
  6. Interpreter Management Systems
  7. Ethics of AI Use in Interpreting
  8. Conclusions

As we march towards a future where technology and humans work in unison, I hope this chapter will contribute to the broader conversation on the potential and challenges of AI in interpreting. I invite you all to join me on this explorative journey, as we delve into the past, present, and future of CAI.

Here is the synopsis:

Over the last 20 years, digital tools for interpreters have evolved from easy-to-use glossary creation and management solutions to complex workstations that cover most stages of the interpreter workflow, from assignment preparation to terminology lookup during interpretation. Currently, computer-aided interpretation (CAI) tools are starting to offer advanced features based on recent developments in artificial intelligence, such as automatic speech recognition, machine translation, etc., sometimes becoming part of integrated platforms, for example for the provision of remote interpretation.

This chapter provides a historical overview of CAI tools focusing on current technological developments in the artificial intelligence (AI) space. It begins by discussing the rationale for creating tailor-made interpreter support tools in the light of interpreters’ specific needs. Against this background, the author offers a chronological overview of the development of CAI technology and a comparison and categorization of the available tools. Previous research on computer-assisted interpreting is briefly presented. It follows a general introduction to key AI topics as applied to the field of interpreting technology. The conclusions address potential avenues for future developments and challenges.
